Director of Insights & Strategy
Gretchen is the go-to player for projects involving user needs analysis, secondary research, information architecture, and strategic opportunity frameworks. Her focus is understanding how people attempt to articulate needs, how language and design meet (or fail to meet) those needs, and how people know when they've discovered what they need. You’ll find her working with medical devices, packaged goods, and digital service providers. Her client roster includes Stryker, P&G, Pernod Ricard, Allstate, LinkedIn, and PayPal.
Before Speck, Gretchen worked at Leo Burnett, Wieden + Kennedy, and Ziba Design. She’s handled media planning for Maytag, software launches for Microsoft, and oral care advertising for P&G. At Ziba, she addressed information architecture, naming, and ethnography needs for clients ranging from Portland General Electric to Bissell to Whirlpool. Gretchen is a Fulbright Scholar, with a master's degree in Information Science from the University of Michigan and a bachelor's degree in German from Dartmouth College. She frequently speaks and writes on topics relating to the intersection of user experience and information needs.
She is a professional standup comic and event host, as well as the mother of two small girls and two slightly smaller cats.
