Renovo Motors

The first all-electric American supercar

The Challenge

Renovo Motors, a Silicon Valley-based car company with the mission of building the world’s most exciting vehicles, came to Speck Design to create an enclosure for their patent-pending battery technology in the Renovo Coupe, the first all-electric American supercar.

The goal: come up with a visual language, evocative of a 1960s hot rod car, while alluding to the latest in EV technology.

The Solution

An in-depth exploration of prominent features of American classic cars over the years indicated to us that our battery enclosure design on the factory-modified Shelby American CSX9000 chassis needed to reflect power, speed, and high-tech. We integrated materials such as chrome and purposefully exposed bright orange cables, reflective of a glowing hot engine. We created a look and feel indicative of a high performance electric vehicle by mechanically engineering a separate battery containment enclosure for a retrofit car in development. In doing so, we closely considered environmental factors as well as sealing and impact requirements.

The Results

After spending the last few years in stealth mode developing their EV technology, Renovo Motors is now focused on redefining the driving experience and “building machines that push the evolution of automotive engineering." It appears they already have; the Coupe is considered the world’s fastest rear-wheel drive electric vehicle in production, and Renovo is already delivering factory models to customers. The vehicle, which contains 3 high voltage lithium ion battery packs for optimal weight distribution and charges in 30 minutes, was displayed at the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
