Virtual holographic visualization tool

The Challenge

zSpace's virtual holographic visualization tool allows 3D interaction with virtual “objects” in environments ranging from education to medical to engineering. Speck Design was called upon to transform something inherently fragile  -- a virtual reality device -- into something that conveyed boldness and confidence, encouraging interactive experiences.

The Solution

Speck Design knew that zSpace's product had applicability across business and user environments. As such, the system needed to be approachable and easy to use for a range of users. The main challenge was the placement of and interaction between elements, including the 24" HD display, four discrete motion tracking sensors, proprietary glasses with tracking beacons, and a handheld stylus. The design team was determined to create a thin, high-end display that integrated seamlessly into the current customer environment while blending the real with the virtual.

The Results

To support a platform creating real-world 3D holograms, we designed a virtual "hologram arena," in which the main attraction (a 3D image) floats above the liquid crystal display. Surrounding sensors served as stadium lights illuminating the field of play. The result: an iconic design solution that made the zSpace system enticing, immersive, and suitable for users around the world.

Today, zSpace is used by thousands of students in schools in California, New York, Florida and Texas. zSpace was named the Best Digital Device for Education in the 2015 British Educational Training and Technology (BETT) awards; the 2014 “3D Education Product of the Year” by the International 3D and Advanced Imaging Society; a Best New Product from 2014 Tech and Learning Magazine’s Awards of Excellence; and 2014 Cool Vendor in Education by Gartner, Inc.
