The Opportunity

Recognizing an unprecedented chance to reshape the perception of internet solutions, Speck Design partnered with Google to develop the fourth iteration of Google Fiber's design language. Rooted in Google Fiber's core values — speed, future-forward, home-friendly, simplicity, transparency, locality, long-term relationship, and distinctiveness from competitors — Speck Design aimed to establish Google Fiber as a revolutionary, advanced, and approachable internet solution.

Research and Approach

Our research and approach centered on understanding the current product perceptions, experiences, and unmet user needs. This crucial step allowed us to grasp the design and aesthetics expectations concerning the TV and internet ecosystem inside the homes of users, forming the basis for the universal design language (UDL).

We focused on creating a UDL that would unify the look, feel, and interactions of the Google Fiber product family. This involved creating a harmonious design language for the Network Box, Network Box Plus, TV Box, Fiber Jack, WiFi Extender/Repeater, and Remote Control.

Concept Creation and Refinement

Armed with the insights from our research phase, we embarked on developing three design language concepts. Each of these represented unique interpretations of product form, surfacing, and part break-up. A detailed exploration of branding, color, and material solutions ensued.

After evaluating and refining these concepts, a single, final design language emerged that satisfied all design criteria and paid homage to Google Fiber's distinctive values. The design details, graphics, branding, HMI details, LED lighting, color, and material proposals were meticulously honed. This was followed by the creation of full-scale, non-functional appearance models of the final designs.

The Impact

The new design language by Speck Design catapulted Google Fiber's brand expression into an iconic status. The modern aesthetics combined with functionality delivered an approachable and friendly perception of internet solutions, making Google Fiber stand out in the industry. The final design embodies Google Fiber’s values and caters to the needs of its users, paving the way for a new era of internet solutions. The cohesive design language across Google Fiber's product range manifests Google's promise of a future-forward, simple, and unique internet solution.
