Speck Design collaborated with Intuity Medical, Inc. to transform diabetes testing through the POGO Automatic® Blood Glucose Monitoring System. Balancing aesthetics and functionality, we designed a portable, user-friendly device that resembles a consumer product more than a medical device. The successful completion highlights our expertise in crafting designs that enhance user experiences, resulting in a breakthrough product that's widely available across the U.S.
Intuity Medical, Inc. is a company that was founded with the stated goal of making blood glucose testing simple, easy, and discreet for millions of people who have diabetes. They set out to create revolutionary medical device technology for diabetes testing that is convenient and discreet.
“Testing really can be this simple.” -Intuity Medical
The POGO Automatic® Blood Glucose Monitoring System The first and only FDA-cleared, One-StepTM, automatic blood glucose monitoring system with ten-test cartridge technology ends the need for separate test strips and lancets.
Creating the POGO medical device meant revolutionizing how people with diabetes test their blood sugar. It was critical for the Pogo industrial design not to look like a medical product because it was to be implemented as a consumer product. Since users would be using the product outside of their homes most of the time, the device needed to be portable and sized to fit in purses and pockets. However, since many of the specifics of the product were already developed, one of the major challenges would be adjusting some features without impacting others. The primary concern for the redesign was the location and action of the test button since this would contribute to ease of use and set this self-diagnostic medical device apart from traditional diabetes testing solutions. A stand-up storage feature would also need to be worked into the design.
By employing Speck’s user experience team to work in coordination with our industrial design team, we were able to address functionality, human factors, ergonomics, usability, and aesthetics early on in the design process and immediately reconciled the design elements that could change and could not be changed. Through brainstorming, 3D foam modeling, and rapid prototyping, the team was then able to refine the appearance and stand-up functionality based on real-world ergonomics and user input on size and appearance.
The automatic blood glucose monitoring system is a simple to use blood glucose testing system that can be deployed easily and discreetly using only one hand. It is used by millions of patients to regularly test their blood glucose and upload results in a secure Patterns® app. It syncs POGO Automatic data to let users easily track blood glucose results on their iOS or Android-based phone via Bluetooth or their computer via USB cable. This gives patients and healthcare professionals a comprehensive way to detect and manage important patterns and trends that impact overall blood glucose control. POGO Automatic® Blood Glucose Monitoring System is the first and only FDA-cleared blood glucose monitor. POGO Automatic is now available for purchase with a prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) at Walgreens stores across the U.S. and CVS Pharmacy locations. Speck succeeded in streamlining form and ease of functioning, which are major contributing factors to the POGO’s popularity among diabetics and success in the self-testing medical device arena.
