The key challenges in the Rodan and fields concept exploration were zeroing in on the preliminary aesthetic and needle placement, as well as understanding the existing micro-current product market. The combination of micro-needling and micro-current to both exfoliate and deliver energy to the skin was not a new concept, but since the eroller would be a medical device product, it would need to go through the rigorous development needed to clear FDA approval. Rhodan and Fields also wanted to deliver a user experience unlike any other on the market.
The first part of the concept exploration involved the team gathering a deep understanding of FDA and customer constraints. After developing potential electrical system architecture and schematics, the exploration turned to preliminary aesthetic and ergonomic concept development. Through visualization with hand sketches and 3D CAD renderings, the team was able to flush out various forms and supporting analysis of various design directions for the client to consider
The forms and concepts explored by Speck Design were ultimately introduced into the Rodan and Fields derma roller on the market today. As part of the award-winning Redefine AMP MD System, the roller works to micro-exfoliate the uppermost layer of the skin and prep it for regenerative product treatments. It is one of the highest-rated products by Rodan and Fields with a 5-star rating from over 800 site reviews.
