Industrial design and Engineering of Wireless charger puck
The Client

 Product ideator Kyla Wilkinson

The Product

Sparkee is a first-of-its-kind, two-part solution for wireless charging. It includes a mag-safe battery pack that magnetically attaches to the back of a phone for wire-free charging and a plug-in recharging cradle to power the pack. It also includes a USB-C port for traditional cord charging, or so users can charge multiple devices at once.

The Challenge

Kyla Wilkenson came to Speck with her idea to create a "wireless" charging device that magnetically attaches to the back of a phone to allow the user to move around free from wires when getting power from the device. Up until the creation of Sparkee, wireless chargers were a single unit that plugged into the wall, limiting mobility when charging. Kyla’s idea of a two-part charging system meant a charging base that plugged into the wall with a wire-free charging pack/puck could be detached from the base to add an element of wire-free mobility. The high visibility of the charging puck meant our team would need to balance form and function during this project and reconcile the design concept with the constraints of charging technology. Also, the client's vision for a charger that looked as new and innovative as its technology would need to drive the aesthetic choices.

The process

Our team started by exploring how the shape of the Sparkee charging puck would be affected by the constraints of the Qi charging coil integral to the charging function. The trade-off for more power is always more size, making bulkiness one of the team's biggest pitfalls to avoid. Each iteration of the charger's shape/form was considered and changed to accommodate the technical requirements like LED and USB-C port placement until the final shape was found. In order to stay true to the client's vision for something that both functioned and looked new and innovative, Speck chose to use bold color options for the charging puck and added a circular peek-a-boo window over the Qi Coil for a futuristic "deconstructed" look.

the outcome

The Sparkee charger is a revolutionary solution that lets users live their best lives while charging their phones. It adds the convenience of portability to charge for those who need to charge their phone on the run. The final product comes in three bold colors and is incredibly low-profile to fit the modern aesthetic. Sparkee is mag-safe for use on iPhones but also comes with an additional magnet for phone cases as w way to make it compatible with any brand of phone. The charging cradle plugs into the wall and allows users to recharge their phones wirelessly on the base. However, a cleverly located USB-C on the Sparkee charging puck also allows for traditional cord charging and/or for multiple devices to be charged at once.
